Vertex Hydrogen will provide low-carbon hydrogen to Pilkington UK to further develop more sustainable ways of manufacturing glass.
Pilkington UK, part of the NSG Group, was the world’s first flat glass manufacturer to fire its furnace on 100% biofuel as part of an industry trial to find sustainable alternatives to natural gas. NSG recently announced an increased ambition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through a re-certified Science Based Target.
“We are fully committed to our NSG Group target of achieving net zero by 2050,” says Neil Syder, Pilkington UK’s managing director. “Firing the float glass furnace using hydrogen instead of natural gas is a key part of our strategy to reduce carbon emissions. Decarbonizing the glass-making process represents a significant challenge, so it’s critical that we partner with academics and industry groups, particularly here in the Northwest.”
