The Turkish glassware manufacturer and producer of glass packaging and flat glass has invested in a sand preparation facility in Mersin, Turkey, to ensure the raw material supply needs of its new flat glass investments in Mersin.
Şişecam aims to secure close and sustainable resources for its production processes and proactively manage the risks caused by disruptions in the supply chain. Officials say the sand preparation facility will have an annual capacity of 490,000 tons. The annual capacity of the Mersin dolomite limestone preparation plant will reach 655,000 tons per year, with a 165,000-ton capacity increase expected.
“The disruptions in the supply chain, which started with the global pandemic and increased with the Russia-Ukraine war, have deepened,” says Ahmet Kirman, chairperson and executive board member. “Providing effective governance against supply interruption risks is becoming increasingly important for the sustainability of corporate successes in a global environment full of uncertainties. Various strategies such as long-term purchasing agreements, collaborations with critical suppliers and vertical integration are becoming the essential and permanent components of supply chain management.”
Officials say the sand preparation facility will begin production in 2025. The total investment for both projects will be approximately $82 million.
