The Aluminum Extruders Council (AEC) revealed the winners of the 2023 Aluminum Extrusion Design Competition. The event hosted more than 75 high school and college students worldwide, all vying for the chance to secure a cash scholarship. The cash prizes totaled more than $15,000.

The judges for the competition were Joe Jackman, president of Almag Aluminum in Brampton, Ontario; AEC chairperson Brook Massey, president of MI Metals in Oldsmar, Fla.; and Craig Werner, president and CEO of Werner Extrusion Solutions in Northbrook, Ill.

  • Sustainable Design – The sustainable design $3,500 scholarship was awarded to Bhushan Deshmukh of Manchester, U.K., for his multi-purpose, low-cost bus stand.

First Place – The $5,000 first-first scholarship prize went to Drew Klopfenstein, a sophomore studying industrial design at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. His design featured a modular traffic light made from extruded aluminum components. Each light module slides on and off from the main base plate.

Second Place – The second place $4,000 scholarship prize went to Brady Hawks of Laingsburg, Mich. He is studying industrial design at Purdue University. His design, ATLAS, is an electric motorcycle made of extruded aluminum. Hawks designed the bike to be used in urban environments. The design was born from examining existing electric motorcycles that “lack the fusion of functionality and agility in their designs,” he said.

Third Place – The third-place $3,000 scholarship prize went to Sarah Fatouros. She is a senior studying industrial design at Dawson College in Montreal. Her Oasis Retail Shelving design features multiple configurations that can be made, giving retailers flexibility in how the shelves are used. A built-in accent lighting feature and the adjustable shelving heights made this attractive design a winner in the eyes of the judges.

Sustainable Design – The sustainable design $3,500 scholarship was awarded to Bhushan Deshmukh of Manchester, U.K., for his multi-purpose, low-cost bus stand. The versatile covered bus stand provides an area for seating, a built-in bicycle stand, integrated solar panels and even a garden wall feature.
