AGC Glass Europe started production on a new laminating line in Osterweddingen, Germany. Company officials say the line was inaugurated on April 26 after a months-long ramp-up phase.

Enrico Ceriani, vice president of Architectural Glass Europe & Americas, explains that the line is in response to an anticipated upturn in the glass industry. It will turn Osterweddingen into a fully integrated plant where standard and extra-clear glass produced by the existing float line can be directly processed into added-value products.

Officials say the line gives AGC a flexible tool capable of producing a full range of laminated products, from half-jumbo sizes to custom sizes and even jumbo XXL sizes (up to 22 feet)–with or without high-performance coatings.

Officials add that Osterweddingen’s full integration allows AGC to take its sustainable approach even further. The new line will help optimize truck transport across Europe, reducing AGC’s carbon footprint by preventing 1,100 tons of carbon emissions annually. The plant is also slated to start producing low-carbon glass in the months ahead.
