ASTM International Announces Publication of Revised Standard Specification for Flat Glass

The American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) International has published the revised edition of ASTM C1036 – Standard Specification for Flat Glass, developed by subcommittee C14.08. The revisions came as part of the document’s five-year review cycle. This specification covers the requirements for annealed, monolithic, flat soda-lime glass supplied as cut sizes or stock sheets.

According to Steve Thomas of Guardian Glass, who served as the ASTM C1036 technical chair, the updates included a range of minor clarifications, along with the standard specification’s periodic review cycle. These include:
• Clarification of the publication’s scope of coverage;
• Improvement of the content regarding chips;
• Inclusion of a lighting intensity limit amidst blemish examination; and
• Introduction of a glass flatness requirement, keyed to a new non-mandatory appendix on available measurement techniques.

According to ASTM, C1036 “covers the quality requirements of flat, transparent, clear, and tinted glass … intended to be used primarily for architectural glazing products including: coated glass, insulating glass units, laminated glass, mirrors, spandrel glass or similar uses.
