Vitro Launches Jumbo Coater in Wichita Falls, Texas

Vitro Architectural Glass is proving that everything is bigger in Texas. The company is now producing some of North America’s largest glass lites with low-E, magnetron sputtered vacuum deposition (MSVD) coatings at its plant in Wichita Falls, Texas. Vitro launched its new Coater7 in August 2018.

The Coater7 represents a $55 million investment. It is capable of applying all of the company’s low-E MSVD coatings on a range of glass substrates of various thickness and standard sizes of 130 by 204 inches. The MSVD coating process enables glass manufacturers to apply ultra-thin layers of silver to glass, creating low-E coatings that deflect solar energy and transmit high levels of daylight. The new coater is 50 per-cent longer, including conveyors, and 22 percent wider than the previous one. The building that houses the Coater7 is a quarter of a mile and is 87 percent larger than the Coater6 building.

The jumbo MSVD coater applies Solarban solar control low-E coatings on a variety of large-area glass substrates in standard thicknesses while providing precision color control and aesthetics. It will produce more glass-per-energy-unit than most MSVD coaters currently in operation, while increasing the plant’s annual low-E glass production by 20 percent.

The Wichita Falls plant is one of the company’s four U.S. manufacturing facilities. It was selected as the site for the MSVD coater in February 2017, four months after the company acquired all assets of PPG’s former flat glass business in October 2016.

Vitro chose a Southern U.S. location for the new coater since there is a high demand for low-E coated glass in that region, according to Bill Haley, the plant manager. He noted that the location’s shipping distance is more than 1,000 miles. Also, approximately 10 percent of products go overseas, using the Houston port.

“The trend in buildings today is large, expansive glass—with some panels over 12 feet tall—that is also energy efficient,” said Haley. “Vitro can now meet architects’ growing demand for low-E glass in sizes as large as 130 by 204 inches. The coater further enhances our ability to cost-efficiently produce a variety of high-performance architectural glasses that comply with more stringent building codes and meet the industry’s increasingly complex design challenges.”

IBP Acquires Cutting Edge Glass

Installed Building Products Inc., an installer of insulation and complementary building products, has acquired Denver-based Cutting Edge Glass, which specializes in providing glass and glazing systems to the commercial construction market. Cutting Edge Glass has annual revenue of more than $10 million.

The family-owned glass supplier will offer commercial, residential and automotive window glass replacement services. Vista Glass provides replacement services for large glass paneling for windows, storefronts and large-panel office windows. … Tempco Glass Fabrication, a New York regional glass supplier is now certified by Guardian Glass and by Vitro Architectural Glass. The two major glass manufacturers have both issued certifications allowing Tempco to process and supply its trade customers with higher level energy efficient glass products for all property applications. … Solar Innovations Architectural Glazing Systems recently raised $4,500 for five local non-profit organizations during its 2018 second quarter Solar Cares campaign.
