CGH Stops Operation at J.E. Berkowitz, Announces Imminent Closures

After 100 years, J.E. Berkowitz (JEB) in Pedricktown, N.J., is no longer in business. The news came in early February when Consolidated Glass Holdings (CGH), JEB parent company, confirmed the closing.

The company stated that all of its operations—JEB, Solar Seal of South Easton, Mass., and Columbia Commercial Building Products (CCBP) of Rockwall, Texas—as well as SSI Consolidated Holdings (SSI), which consists of Global Security Glazing of Selma, Ala., and Dlubak Specialty Glass of Blairsville, Pa., were affected by the global pandemic that began last March. “While some of the operations continue to have success, some were more severely impacted, resulting in necessary corporate actions,” reads the statement dated February 5, noting that SSI’s Global Security Glazing and Dlubak Specialty Glass remain open and operating at full strength. The statement continued, saying JEB officially paused operations and furloughed employees. “… the delays that initially came with the onset of COVID-19 took a significant toll. Furthermore, disruptions to the workforce as a result of the pandemic were substantial …”

The statement added that operations at CCBP were also “winding down” primarily due to the end of its lease at its Rockwall, Texas, facility. “With a lease terminating and the cost of moving high-end glass fabrication equipment looming, CGH decided it was prudent to complete its remaining pipeline and subsequently liquidate the operation unless a buyer can be found.”

The statement noted at that time Solar Seal was open and operating, “however, a notice of the plant closure was sent to employees based on the current situation. We are hopeful that conditions will improve and that we will be able to revise our outlook and continue operations at Solar Seal.”

As of press time, Solar Seal remained open for business.

“Our goal is to have Solar Seal continue to operate as we focus on servicing the needs of our loyal customer base, our dedicated employees, our shareholders, vendors and investors,” Cummings told USGlass magazine in late February.
