It’s hard to believe it’s May already—the first third of the year has passed with lightning speed. April 2022 was one of the busiest and most memorable months our industry has seen in a long time. Consider all that’s happened in the past four weeks.

The month began with the return of Glass Expo Northeast, April 6-7, on Long Island. I can’t tell you how wonderful it felt to see so many long-time friends and to welcome some new ones. It just felt “normal” to feel “normal” again.

Also taking place simultaneously was the exhilarating International Year of Glass (IYOG), National Day of Glass celebration in Washington, D.C. I did not get to attend personally, but editor Ellen Rogers told me it was enough to make anyone “fall in love with glass, for the first time or again.” Sometimes we are so wrapped up in producing, fabricating, using or installing glass that we forget what a natural marvel material it is. IYOG reminded us all of that. You can read more about the event on page 40.

One day later, on April 8, we got word that USGlass magazine and several other publications from our parent company, Key Media & Research, had been honored with several awards from the American Society of Business Publication Editors. USGlass and its sister publication, the Architects’ Guide to Glass & Metal emerged big winners.

Editor Ellen Rogers took home the gold in the technical article category for her article, “Less than Zero,” which reports on the industry’s opportunity to drive down its embodied carbon emissions (more about that article later).

USGlass and the Architects’ Guide to Glass & Metal, led by art directors Dawn Campbell and Saundra Hutchison, swept the front cover photo category, capturing all three awards.

USGlass also won bronze in the Design – Infographics category for the work of Saundra Hutchison, art director, and Nick St. Denis, director of research. If you have ever produced a visually pleasing, in-depth infographic, you know how difficult this is.
• Editor Drew Vass received a bronze for an article in Door and Window Market [DWM] magazine.
• Assistant editor Chris Collier received a silver for an article in Paint Protection Film magazine.

I am exceedingly proud of our award winners and of Tara Taffera and her whole editorial team for receiving these well-deserved honors for multiple magazines.

Then, on April 26, Ellen Rogers received the highest prize in our industry, the Jesse H. Neal award for technical writing for the same “Less than Zero” article that was honored by ASPBE.

The Jesse H. Neal Awards are the most prestigious editorial honors in business-to-business journalism. They are often described as the “Pulitzer Prize of B2B journalism.” While KMR editors have been finalists before, this is the first time anyone has won the elusive Neal.

This was the fourth nomination for Ellen and her first win, and I couldn’t be more proud of her. Congratulations, Ellen!!!!
