Joel Helfer

Joel Helfer, former Costello Glass and Mirror Co. president and former president of the Illinois Glass Association, died Tuesday at the age of 69, four days before his 70th birthday.

His late father, Herman Helfer, was a glass industry executive who served as president of Columbia Glass & Plastic and general manager of Novelty Glass & Mirror.

Lyle Hill, managing director of Keytech North America, knew Joel Helfer for more than 40 years.

“One of the most positive and upbeat people I ever knew. I had the chance to work with him on several occasions and I always appreciated his sense of humor and common sense approach to problems. Just an all-around good guy. The Helfer family was well known in the glass community in and around Chicago for many years. His father Herman and brother Harvey all worked in the family owned businesses and were respected and admired by all,” he says.

Joel Helfer is survived by his brother Harvey, sister Gail, wife Eve, and three children: Zachary, Jeffrey and Rachel.

His funeral will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Beth Hillel Congregation Bnai Emunah in Wilmette, Ill. Contributions in Joel Helfer’s name can be made to the Jewish United Fund.

Condolences can be made to Evie Helfer, courtesy of Megan and Zach Helfer, at 183 Cassin Road, Naperville, Ill., 60565.
