The price for glass and glass product manufacturing jumped slightly in September. According to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), September’s Producer Price Index (PPI) for glass and glass product manufacturing rose by 0.6%. This follows an adjusted 0.7% price drop in August.

DOL data also shows the overall PPI for final demand increased by 0.5%. Unadjusted, the index for final demand advanced 2.2% for the 12 months ended in September, the largest increase since moving up 2.3% for the 12 months ended in April.

Glass and Glazing Material Prices

Flat Glass – Flat glass prices rose by 0.4% in September, following two consecutive price declines. Adjusted, prices for flat glass decreased by 1% in August and 0.7% in July. On a 12-month basis, prices for flat glass remain up 2.9%.

Flat Glass Manufacturing – Prices for flat glass manufacturing dropped by 1.1% in September, continuing a three-month trend of lower manufacturing prices. Year-to-year, prices for flat glass manufacturing are down 5.1%

Fabricated Structural Metal Products – Prices for fabricated structural metal products rose for the third straight month. September’s prices increased by 0.1%, following a 0.1% increase in August and a 0.4% increase in July. Despite the increases, year-to-year fabricated structural metal products prices remain down 1.4%.

Ornamental and Architectural Metalwork – Prices for ornamental and architectural metalwork remain unchanged in September. The sector’s prices had decreased for three consecutive months before September’s reading. Year-to-year, ornamental and architectural metalwork prices are down 2.3%.

Metal Windows – Metal window prices remained unchanged for the second consecutive month. Prices for the sector last dropped in July 2023 (-0.2%). Year-to-year, metal window prices are up 0.9%.

Metal Doors and Frames – The sector’s prices jumped 0.6% in September. This follows a 0.5% price increase in August. Metal door and frame prices remained unchanged in July. Year-to-year, prices for metal doors and frames are up 3.0%.

Builders’ Hardware – The prices of builders’ hardware, which includes window hardware, remained unchanged in September. This is the fifth straight month that the sector’s PPI remained unchanged. Year-to-year, prices for builders’ hardware are up 0.3%.
