‘Twas the Night Before Christmas … 2020

By Lyle Hill

‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the place
Not a smile was seen, a mask on each face.
A Christmas with COVID just didn’t seem right,
Everyone filled with fear, worry and fright.
All seemed so gloomy … every day getting sadder,
Would this be the Christmas that just didn’t matter?
Then out in the yard I heard such a crash,
I ran to the low-E glazed window … opened the sash.
And what to my weary, tired eyes did appear?
But jolly old Santa and nine socially-distanced reindeer.
He said he had come for his annual Christmas caper,
Bringing gifts for all, including toilet paper.
He went right to work and soon finished his task,
Then headed for the door while adjusting his mask.
In the blink of an eye, he was up on his sleigh,
Preparing to leave and get back on his way.
He taught me a lesson … making me wiser,
While filling our stockings with hand sanitizer.
The virus, it’s true, had disrupted our days,
Affecting our loved ones in just awful ways.
We can’t even mistletoe or just give a hug
Because of this awful and unwelcomed bug.
But Christmas, my friends, to a virus can’t fall,
Because it’s about peace, love and joy for all.
So after all the medicines, treatments and shots,
The meaning of Christmas cannot be forgot.
Then I heard Santa say as he flew out of sight,
Merry Christmas to all and keep up the fight!
