Every Thursday leading up to USGlass magazine’s 50th Anniversary celebration in August, USGNN.com™ is taking a look back at past issues and highlighting advertisements, stories and images that ran throughout the publication’s half-century life. This week, PPG Place is getting sealed up.

In the November/December 1985 issue of USGlass magazine, PPG Place was featured in two advertisements—both for sealant companies.

“You’re looking at PPG Place,” reads an ad from H.B. Fuller Company. “Over ½ million square feet of architectural glass… sealed with Thermo-Seal hot butyl.

Then, a couple pages later, PTI Sealants chimes in with an ad of its own, also highlighting PPG Place.

“PPG Place, the six building complex in downtown Pittsburgh is sheathed with over one million square feet of reflective glass,” the ad reads. “PTI 707 architectural sealant was used to insure a weatherproof sealant that will last.”

That’s not something we see every day: two similar products featuring the same project in the same issue, just a few pages apart. PPG Place certainly needed quite a bit of sealant!

  1. PTI should have employed an English Major to review their copy. The proper statement should have read: “PTI 707 architectural sealant was used to ensure (with an “E”) a weatherproof sealant….”
