Every Thursday, in conjunction with USGlass magazine’s 50th anniversary celebration, USGNN.com™ is taking a look back at past issues and highlighting advertisements, stories and images that ran throughout the publication’s half-century life. This week, we’re headed to work.

A decade and a half ago, USGlass began running its “Best Companies to Work for in the Glass & Metal Industry” feature. From 2000-2002, it was published annually, before going to every other year and now every three years.

Here’s the cover for the third annual edition, which was published in the August 2002 issue:

USG August 2002

Companies were ranked based on multiple reader surveys and the benefits—as well as the extent of the benefits—each company offers. This included retirement, medical, educational, etc. Company “values” and other incalculable factors were also considered. Check out the full 2002 feature here.

These variables have been slightly adjusted over time and improved upon based on reader feedback and the changing nature of the economy. The most recent edition of the feature can be read here.

The next “Best Companies to Work For” Feature will be published in 2016.
