While the Producer Price Index (PPI) for final demand softened overall in December 2023 compared to December 2022, prices for glass and glass product manufacturing remained elevated. The U.S. Department of Labor Statistics reported that glass products and manufacturing rose 0.3% in December. The sector’s prices are up 4.6% year-to-year. The last substantial price decrease was in August 2023 (0.6%).

The overall PPI, which measures inflation before it hits consumers, was 1% higher in December 2023 than last year, missing a predicted increase of 1.3%. Monthly, prices fell 0.1%. This was the third straight month of declines, with November’s previous flat reading being revised to a 0.1% decrease.

Glass and Glazing Material Prices

Flat Glass – Flat glass rose by nearly 1% in December, following a revised 0.2% increase in November. Prices last dropped in August 2023, when the sector recorded a 0.8% decrease. Year-to-year, flat glass prices are up 2.1%.

Flat Glass Manufacturing – Flat glass manufacturing prices remained flat in December. This follows a 0.1% drop in November. Since August 2023, the sector’s prices have dropped or remained flat in four of the past five months. Year-to-year, prices for the sector are down 5.8%.

Fabricated Structural Metal Products – Prices for fabricated structural metal products rose again in December, increasing by 1.6%. The sector’s prices rose by an adjusted 0.4% in November, 0.6% in October and 0.4% in September. Year-to-year, fabricated structural metal products prices are up 2.5%.

Ornamental and Architectural Metalwork – The price of ornamental and architectural metalwork products decreased by 0.1% in December. This ended a three-month run of flat or increased prices. Year-to-year, prices for the sector are up 1.1%.

Metal Windows – Metal window prices remained flat in December, continuing a run of steady or declining prices throughout the past five months. Year-to-year, metal window prices are down 0.5%.

Metal Doors and Frames – Prices for metal doors and frames stayed steady in December, following a 0.1% decline in November. The last price increase for metal door and frame products was in September 2023. Year-to-year prices for these products remain up 2.1%.

Builders’ Hardware – The prices of builders’ hardware, which includes window hardware, remained unchanged in December. Prices for builders’ hardware went relatively unscathed throughout 2023. The year-over-year price for builders’ hardware is down 1.2%.
