A Look at What Companies Planned to Feature During A’20

Life around the world changed this spring as COVID-19 spread quickly across the globe, and many organizations made the difficult decision to cancel their spring events. Among those events was the American Institute of Architects Conference on Architecture 2020 (A’20). Originally scheduled for May 14-16 in Los Angeles, organizers announced the event would not take place this year. While exhibitors and attendees can’t be there in person, that doesn’t mean you have to miss some of the product highlights that companies have worked so hard to bring to market. Let’s practice some physical distancing and take a little tour of the show floor right here in this issue.


Petersen’s New Rib

Petersen was ready to unveil its four new Box Rib wall panels featuring 87-degree rib angles and a variety of rib spacing patterns. The Box Rib architectural wall panels are 1 3
/8-inches deep with a nominal width of 12 inches. Each of the Box Rib profiles is offered in a no-clip (fastener flange) option, or a clip-fastened panel to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction. They are marketed as suitable for most nonresidential applications, as well as residential buildings. The Box Rib panels are part of Petersen’s PAC-CLAD Precision Series line of wall panels, which means they can be mixed with the seven Precision Series Highline wall cladding products to create a wide variety of custom patterns for a building’s exterior.

They can be installed horizontally or vertically. The Box Rib is backed by ASTM E tests: 330, 1592, 283 and 331, along with AAMA 501. Box Rib panel length runs from a minimum of 4 feet to maximum lengths of 30 feet for steel, and 22 feet for aluminum on the no-clip (fastener flange) version. Longer lengths are available on clip panels. The panels are available in 24- and 22-gauge steel, .032 and .040 aluminum in 45 standard PAC-CLAD colors, and Galvalume Plus.


SAF Stocks New Thicknesses

Southern Aluminum Finishing Co. (SAF) is now stocking 3/16-inch (0.190-inch) and ¼-inch (0.25-inch) anodizing quality material in 5005 alloy. According to the company,
5005 is the ideal sheet alloy for anodizing. SAF says it’s the only company in North America that stocks 5005 in these thicknesses, and can anodize the material in-house. Heavy-gauge aluminum can be used for blast-resistant jobs and other applications that require extra durability.



Clear Views

SAFTI FIRST is focusing on both increased sizes of its fire-rated glazing products, as well as transparency. According to the company it has the largest maximum sizes tested of any fire-resistive glazing product with its USA-made, ASTM E-119 rated SuperLite II-XLB 120 fire-resistive glazing. This glass has a maximum clear view area of 7,980 square inches with a maximum clear view height or width of 133 inches. In addition, SuperLite II-XLB has butt-glazing capabilities to eliminate the need for obstructive vertical mullions, according to the company.

Also from SAFTI FIRST, the company says its SuperLite II-XL with Starphire Ultra-Clear glass has the highest visible light transmission of any fire-resistive glazing product. The glass can achieve a visual light transmission of 89.5%, according to the company.



Guardian Puts Birds First

Guardian Bird1st glass offers a balance of solar performance, aesthetics and bird safety with a patent-pending UV stripe coating on the first surface that visually signals an impending barrier to birds and helps prevent collisions. The patent-pending UV stripe is virtually invisible to the human eye in dry conditions, according to the company, which creates unimpeded views while helping to protect birds. Paired with select Guardian SunGuard low-E coatings, Bird1st glass may help a project earn LEED Pilot Credit 55 and Toronto Green Standard Bird Collision Deterrence standards.

Guardian Bird1st coating can be applied to Guardian UltraClear low-iron glass or standard clear glass. It must be heat-treated and laminated, and is available in stock sheet sizes up to 102 by 144 inches, at a thickness of 6 mm, with additional thicknesses available upon request.

Guardian Bird1st glass can be customized by pairing it with an insulating glass unit with a variety of high-performance, low-E SunGuard coated glass products on several tinted substrates.


Vitro’s Vision for Solarban

Solarban Acuity glass by Vitro Architectural Glass was developed to offer “upgrade[d] clarity compared to coated clear glass” while meeting energy and code performance criteria. Combining the Acuity low-iron glass is 60% less green than ordinary clear glass, and can be combined with the full range of Solarban solar control low-E coatings, according to the company.



UNIQUIN Handle on Hardware

dormakaba has two new hardware products. The first is UNIQUIN, a system comprised of partitions and door solutions that can be individually designed to separate interior space with glass. A coordinated design of components offers flexibility and function as well as subsequent modifications if required.

The benefits include a matched design with individually combinable components and electric switches and outlets that can be integrated easily and flexibly, according to the company. The system allows for the integration of access control, and sound transmission between adjacent rooms is reduced by up to 40dB. Both normal and high-rise doors can be used with the system, as can separating elements and door solutions with materials between 10-19 mm thick.

The company also has its new GP Series Glass Panic Hardware. For use in a wide range of door sizes and applications, the product offers a customizable design, simplicity in specification, along with a short lead time, field adjustability (patents pending) and efficient exit, according to the company. Marketed as a low risk, high-end option, GP Series panic devices feature a slim profile to support the transparency and aesthetic requirements for glass openings without impacting durability. GP Series devices may be used with deadbolts for manual access control or without a locking function to mirror nearby openings.



Making an Impact with a Low Threshold

YKK AP has a new impact-rated low threshold sliding glass door. Available with multiple features and configurations, this sliding glass door includes the option to install the frame at accessibility compliant height without burying the sill in the substrate.

The YSD 600 TUH is also designed to provide maximum energy performance and occupant comfort with YKK AP’s patented ThermaBond Plus thermal break technology, according to the company. Using the company’s MegaTherm aluminum framing system instead of steel, the sliding glass door offers performance and durability by saving energy and reducing condensation.

Particularly suited for multifamily, hotels, condominiums and multi-purpose buildings, the YSD 600 TUH overall system has factory glazing and screens, as well as standard heavy-duty hardware such as stainless steel tandem rollers and track cover. All panels, fixed and operable, provide a shop-fabricated option and can be pre-glazed in the shop.
