The 213-foot Port of Montreal Tower is hard to miss. The all-glass observation tower resembles a Tetris piece overlooking the Grand Quay of the Port of Montreal. Its unique design highlights glass’ aesthetic appeal and structural integrity, especially in the glass cage 180 feet above the ground.

According to AGNORA officials, the glass cage is a novel feature. The entire structure is glass, self-supporting and an insulating glass unit. This differs from conventional walkable glass projects, where metal beams or structures bear the load.

Officials explain that multiple lites were laminated with a Kuraray SentryGlas interlayer to ensure the cage’s structural integrity. Proper tempering and edgework added to the cage’s durability. NuPress fittings were also used to account for temperature variations and form a weatherproofing seal. Glazing products include Pilkington OptiWhite and Saint-Gobain CoolLite Extreme.
