Automated window attachments, such as shades, screens, draperies, awnings and shutters, help reduce energy costs by opening and closing throughout the day depending on the weather.

The Attachments Energy Rating Council (AERC) announced that automated window attachments can now be certified.

Automated window attachments, such as shades, screens, draperies, awnings and shutters, help reduce energy costs by opening and closing throughout the day depending on the weather. A recent Baltimore Gas & Electric report indicates that shade automation can yield substantial energy savings. On average, customers saved 13.5% on electricity and 3.4% on gas over the installation period.

Ralph Vasami, executive director of AERC, says automation provides a smart solution to increase energy performance and comfort that can be easily integrated with many of today’s in-home technology systems.

“With AERC’s automation rating, the product’s performance is clearly communicated, providing consumers with the information needed to make informed decisions about their window attachment needs,” says Vasami.

AERC’s Energy Performance rating and certification program rates, certifies and labels the energy performance of window ‎attachments to help the public make ‎informed energy savings decisions.
